Walla Walla Community College branding
One of my first big projects at WWCC, and as a designer, was to develop an updated branding style for Walla Walla Community College. Previously designs had been black and athletics/goldenrod yellow. I adjusted the yellow to a gold color to reflect the school colors of Black and Gold, and introduced the metallic shine. The swoops also became a central part of the branding style for the college and by the time I left the position 7 years later, almost everything included a swoop of some kind.
Another central part of the branding I developed was an informal tone, almost bordering on irreverence. Faculty and staff at WWCC didn't take themselves too seriously and we worked with a population that needed someone approachable rather than academic. We really leaned into this at times by "vandalizing" our official college posters (which confused some high school counselors!), using plain English for our copy, and not being afraid to poke fun at ourselves. And this experience for the student carried past the design and into the school as WWCC had fantastic staff who were incredibly helpful and welcoming.
